Back to schoolJuly 4, 2008 @ 9pm in Peru (185 days ago) - View/add comments at Blogger.com A few days back Fernando and I met with the local principal of the Adventist School here in Satipo, and he invited some of our team to come along on Wednesday and help with some of the English classes! Wednesday is the day an English teacher comes along and teaches all the different grades. As they rarely get foreigners here, they thought they would take the opportunity to have the kids learn from some Australians - and also learn a bit about us!
Four of us went along on Wednesday: Dan T, Fernando, Renée and myself (Ben). It was a big day - they start school at 7:30am and finish at around 2pm - just in time for Siesta! I have a new appreciation for teachers - even though their work hours may seem short (and we didn't have to prepare anything or mark assignments/exams) it is really constant work - and at the end of the day you realise that it was quite tiring! Maybe that was just for us inexperienced prac teachers repeating similar things to each class of excited students - across a language barrier!
We were invited to lead out in the morning staff devotion, and Daniel T did that, with Fernando by his side to translate
It was a great devotion, including personal testimony from Dan. The teachers appreciated it!
Some of the kids who were excited to see us when we first walked in
Renée got mobbed! The kids LOVE her!!!
Here Mr T goes through some basic anatomy in English, for the grade 1's
They were cool kids - just like the grade 1ers at home!
One of the posters on the wall, teaching them to be courteous
And here we have a lesson about Australian animals!
This lesson was quite comprehensive in the end! I'm lucky to be able to work close to many of these animals back home :-)
Thanks also to Australia Zoo and the zoo crew for all your support - and for giving me a whole stack of stickers to hand out to the kids over here - they love them!! They had all heard about Steve and already knew about crocodiles :-)
Here Fernando gives a lesson about Australia, and how big it is! It was great having him along to speak Spanish when needed
Dan was also here to learn
He had a special seat at the front of the class :-P
Here's Ben with some happy students
And Renée is possibly under this mob!

This is for you mum and dad - a conversation in their English text book between David and Beth!!
Some of the secondary school students - they were a good bunch to teach!
And here's Nancy, their English teacher
Some of the kids gave us little handmade thank you cards - so nice of them!!!
