Measuring up to the taskJuly 7, 2008 @ 5pm in Peru (182 days ago) - View/add comments at Blogger.com After visiting the special school last week, we discovered an assignment that would dramatically improve the mobility of one of the disabled kids that went to the school. He moved around close to the ground, but could also stand up and get around with chairs.
So we decided to help him out by making a special-sized walker he could use to get around. Something like is often found in retirement homes in Australia.
Steve was the man for the job, so he headed around with Bev, Rudy and myself yesterday to do some measuring and talk to the family about how we could help.
Here is the measuring tape beside some other implements that the boy has used to move around. The new device being made will be adjustable for future-proofing!

We would love to be able to do more home visits like this to help out these kids, but it's very hard to find the families with the kids in need in the first place, and then they're often (understandably) hesitant about having visitors come along and help out. Hopefully when the new facility opens the word will get out and the locals will be able to get a lot more help and resources which are currently not available.
We look forward to seeing the end result in this case! | Recent posts
