Special visit to a special schoolJuly 3, 2008 @ 10am in Peru (187 days ago) - View/add comments at Blogger.com On Monday morning a number of Project Peru team members visited the only special school around, which is outside the main township. It's a small school with two classrooms with eight students in each. Our visit was organised ahead of time by the mayor's wife, so some of the parents and carers of the students came along on the day.
We had some short speeches by teachers and others involved with running the school, and Rudy translated those for us. They were very appreciative of what we are doing here in Peru - building a larger facility which is in a much more accessible location in town. Another important aspect of the new centre will be the rehabilitation it provides in addition to education, so the students can also learn to be self-sufficient.
Western Dan, myself and Fernando interviewed various people there, so that will hopefully be part of a documentary that will be made when we return to Australia.
This is the sign on the special school wall - the same as has been put up at our construction site :-)
The students, teachers, parents, carers and Project Peru team members listen as Rudy translates what has been said.

Doesn't this image say it all? Fernando with a very happy student!
It's going to be so good when the new school and rehab centre opens - and a lot more children will be able to attend and have the same opportunities that other kids have.
Following our first visit, we've arranged a couple of days a week for Project Peru team members to take turns visiting the school and helping out with the kids. Even the construction boys will be taking a break from work to do this - after all, the children are the reason we are here! | Recent posts
