Street sweepers

July 7, 2008 @ 5pm in Peru (182 days ago) - View/add comments at Blogger.com

A few of us got up early on Sunday to help the locals with sweeping the main square and surrounding streets. The locals started at 3am, but we joined them a little later on, after 5am.

Most of the team chose to sleep in to a more reasonable hour as, understadandably, there was a big day at work ahead on the site, and they needed full batteries for that!

Here is the mayor of Satipo carrying his broom to his area. I thought it was great that he came along - and he said he wouldn't expect his staff to do anything that he wouldn't do himself. What a leader!
Dan on the job with his hi-vis gloves working well for safely sweeping in the dark
And Joni is on the job, too!
They're a great team :-)
And now at 6:15am there's a little more light! We swept into piles then someone else would come through and collect these into a wheelbarrow
The mayor sweeping alongside Bev
The mayor's wife came along to check out the action, too!
Dan and Joni - almost finished now!
Rudy also helped out which was cool
What a team!
Thanks heaps to Joni, Rudy, Dan and Bev for braving the early and cool start to help out the locals. The end result was a nice clean main square, ready for a big parade that day! I saw many people drive past surprised to see the Australiano's doing such a thing in their town. Well done!
