Strike two

July 7, 2008 @ 10pm in Peru (182 days ago) - View/add comments at Blogger.com

Now for some news about some potentially interesting events ahead of time!

Tomorrow in Peru a national transport and agricultural workers strike has been organised. This means roads will be blocked and public transport (which most people use here) will not be operating. We can't rent motorbikes either, during this time.

At this stage, we can walk to the site and continue with our project there. The town manager and others will be monitoring the situation and advising us if anything changes.

The strike has been scheduled to start tonight at midnight (2 hours from now) and may last for 1-3 days (or more).

In the past some protests here have aggressive (towards the government) and there is a possibility this could be the same. We just have to wait and see how it pans out...

Here is a another protest we saw in Lima during our walking tour of the city! (hence this blog post headline) It was very loud but peaceful. When they walked past us, many of the workers cheered... I think they were distracted by a group of foreigners!! Will show you a video of that when we get back.
Because we've been drinking so much water (a lot more than the locals - we pretty much never see the Peruvian workers drink water on-site) and bought the whole supermarket out of the 2.5L bottles in recent weeks, the supermarket ordered a lot more in. We purchased most of that tonight, just so we have quite a few days worth handy in a worse-case scenario - as there may be delays in bringing more in, or more expensive prices over the next few days.
Again, we thank you for your continual prayers - we really have seen God leading us and protecting us on our trip so far.

The next couple of days will potentially provide some more adventure travel!
